It can be said that the brand-new 3.0T twin-supercharged engine is completely different from the old one in terms of displacement, structure and intake form. In addition to V6 changing to L6, the supercharging mode has also changed from mechanical supercharging to "double supercharging" form of electronic+turbocharging. The biggest highlight is that its 48V hybrid system can drive the electronic turbocharger before the traditional turbocharger reaches the maximum output, thus improving the vehicle performance and being more conducive to energy saving and emission reduction. Of course, the new 3.0T engine is divided into 360 horsepower and 400 horsepower, of which the 400 horsepower version is equipped on the Land Rover Defender and Range Rover Sport Edition, and the newly discovered equipment is the 360 horsepower version.
The test drive of the 2021 Land Rover Discovery is divided into two major projects, one is the test drive of the urban loop, and the other is the off-road section in Huzhou Land Rover Experience Center. I have driven quite a few Land Rover models using the old 3.0SC engine. Its biggest feature is that the power output is very linear, which is obviously inextricably linked with the structural characteristics of supercharged. Therefore, when I discovered the new model of road test drive, I felt its power output performance and feeling at medium and low speed with great care.
Through my experience, the performance of the new discovery after changing the "core" is really satisfactory. In terms of mechanical structure, it benefits from the assistance of 48V electronic supercharger, the advantage of large displacement, and the relatively sensitive throttle adjustment, which makes it very light and smooth when the vehicle starts, travels at medium and low speeds and walks on urban roads. This sense of calmness is completely incomparable with the same level of 2.0T small-displacement turbocharging.
With the double speed increase of vehicle speed and speed, after the engine speed exceeds 2000rpm, there is no need to worry about the power reserve and stamina of the engine. The word "with the step" is perfect for it. At the same time, thanks to the advantage of large displacement, it may be necessary to drop two gears on the 2.0T model to achieve acceleration, and it may be enough to drop one gear on it. This smoothness in the middle acceleration process will also make people sigh: it’s good to have a large displacement.
Of course, for Land Rover to find this kind of "high horse", the feeling of rapid acceleration or re-acceleration provided by it in daily driving is completely different from that of "small steel cannon". For example, when you step on the accelerator at 60km/h, when the vehicle accelerates from 60 km/h to 120 km/h, it gives you a feeling of standing tall and imposing. The speed of the whole process rises very fast, but the feeling of pushing back is actually soft, which is like sitting in a high-speed train. Its sense of acceleration will not be "pawned" by a small steel gun or a plane taking off. This style is still very comfortable and suitable for the mainstream crowd positioning found by Land Rover.
In addition to the power feeling, every time I drive a Land Rover, I find that its high sitting posture is always exciting. This lofty and condescending feeling is really unique among the medium and large SUVs of luxury brands of 700-100 million yuan, if Land Rover’s own brothers are abandoned. Whether Audi Q7, BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE, their cockpits may have their own understanding and expressions in terms of sense of technology, exquisiteness and luxury, but they are actually similar in sitting posture and vision.
They are definitely higher than ordinary medium and large cars, but they are not much different from their own little brothers, such as X3, Q5L and other urban SUVs. Land Rover found that when you sit in the driver’s seat and drive on the road, you feel the state of mind and "superior" satisfaction. As for the chassis, there is no obvious difference between the new model and the old model. The structure is still the type of front double wishbone and rear multi-link, and the air suspension with adjustable height is also standard in the whole system. At the same time, it also benefits from the advantages of this generation of discovery models sharing the platform with the family eldest brother Range Rover, which makes it very close to the Range Rover in overall driving experience, belonging to a heavy and comfortable type, but not floating. This is the old discovery (No.4) that uses non-loaded body, which even Rexax GX and LX can’t match. Of course, the brother "Range Rover Sport Edition" which also takes the sports route in style is also completely different. The steering feel found by Land Rover belongs to the medium and slightly biased style, with a relatively large steering wheel, which always reminds you that you are driving a big car. The number of laps of the steering wheel is about 2.7 laps from left to right, which is a relatively common level. Even if you go around the underground garage, it is more dexterous and there is not much difficulty in getting started. Of course, it is also because of the positioning of the vehicle model that the steering wheel does not have a strong feedback on the road feeling, so this setting can be more compatible when taking dirt roads or off-road sections.
