Nanbao. com (correspondent Shao Ying, reporter Jonathan Li, Sun Lin and Wu Chunxia) On February 16th, after four hours of "love relay" by relevant departments and institutions, volunteers and enthusiastic citizens, a finless porpoise with a tail injury was successfully rescued in Nanjing section of the Yangtze River and sent to Nanjing Underwater World for emergency treatment. As of the evening of the same day, the finless porpoise recovered well. This is the first successful case of active rescue of the injured finless porpoise in the main stream of the Yangtze River in China.

Jiang Meng, secretary-general of Nanjing finless porpoise aquatic biological protection association, said that on February 11th, they found a finless porpoise with a tail injury when they were inspecting near Changjiang Smile Station on Jiangbian South Road in Gulou. At that time, the finless porpoise was very close to the shore, about 20 meters, and it was clear that its tail skin was injured and infected. They immediately began to track and locate the finless porpoise. "The finless porpoise has been swimming. We must lock its range of activities and master its laws before we can consider further rescue plans."

"We first photographed this injured finless porpoise on February 12, when its tail was entangled in the fishing line and it was a little bruised. Everyone has been paying close attention to it these days, and found that its wound has become bigger due to struggle and infection, and you can see that the meat is turned outside and worn out. Moreover, the tail was entangled in some branches and garbage, and the movement became slow. " Wu Jiamin, a member of the rescue team of Nanjing Yangtze finless porpoise provincial nature reserve, told reporters that the injury of the finless porpoise has become heavier with the naked eye, which has affected its fishing speed. If no help is given, I am afraid the situation is not optimistic.

The injury of finless porpoise affects everyone’s heart. In the past few days, under the guidance of the Yangtze River Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, organized by the Nanjing Yangtze finless porpoise provincial nature reserve management station, coordinated by the Nanjing Agricultural and Rural Bureau, maritime affairs, marine police, Changhang and other departments, the Nanjing finless porpoise aquatic life protection association, Nanjing Underwater World and other institutions, as well as experts and volunteers, formed a rescue "big force" to jointly carry out rescue operations.

In the next few days, the reserve management station organized rescue monitors, photographers and volunteers to search for this finless porpoise with a tail injury, and basically locked its activity range mainly in the waters near the Yangtze River Smile Station to Hongyun Bridge. On February 13th, the reserve management station held an emergency online expert seminar, and entrusted the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences to mobilize six scientific research and monitoring vessels and related staff from Anqing, Anhui, Dangtu and Taizhou, Jiangsu, and assembled in Nanjing on the evening of February 15th.

"Let’s go and save the finless porpoise!" At 8 o’clock on the morning of February 16, in the waters of the finless porpoise Smile Station in Gulou District, Nanjing, the members of the rescue team of Nanjing Yangtze finless porpoise provincial nature reserve found the injured finless porpoise, so they informed the rescue "big troops" to go to the rescue according to the previously formulated rescue plan.

On the morning of February 16th, after receiving the "information", the rescue "big troops" transferred large ships, small boats and speedboats, and invited fishermen who were familiar with water to assist in the search and rescue. When the finless porpoise was found, it was slowly approached by a big ship and opened a large net. Then the two approached the finless porpoise in a boat and quickly "shot" it to the boat. The reporter saw from the video taken at the scene that because the finless porpoise was heavy, when the two joined forces to carry it onto the boat, one side of the boat was forced to roll over and almost fell into the water. Fortunately, the rescuers responded quickly and stabilized the boat.

"This is a 1.31m female finless porpoise. We gave it a simple wound cleaning and disinfection after landing. I also found a stretcher and a blanket soaked in water and wrapped it inside to ensure that it has enough water. " Wu Jiamin said.

Liu Kai, a researcher at the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, was in charge of the on-site command of the search and rescue. On the rescue boat, Liu Kai and his team made preliminary treatment and collected diagnostic samples for the wound of the finless porpoise. At about 12 noon, the injured finless porpoise was escorted to the car, and then the "Jinling Tieqi" cleared the way and rushed to Nanjing Underwater World for treatment.

"When the finless porpoise was sent, the tail injury was more serious. After our emergency treatment and treatment, it is in good condition and still relatively energetic. " Nanjing Underwater World staff told reporters that they cleaned some weeds, fishing lines and ropes for the tail of the finless porpoise. It was found that there were many growths on its tail, a small skin infection on its body and a little injury on its mouth. The medical staff disinfected it, applied medicine and injected antibiotics.

By the afternoon of February 16th, the finless porpoise had completed wound disinfection, routine physical examination and B-ultrasound examination in Nanjing Underwater World, and had been put into the treatment pool for temporary maintenance, and was continuously observed and cared for by the expert team. "The next treatment plan will be formulated according to the inspection results." Liu Kai said.
